A couple of weeks ago while doing some
research on our Cache at Night website I stumbled across a novella called The Night Cache by
Andy Duncan. I was intrigued by the
title alone and contacted the publisher for a review copy and I’m glad I did.
I found myself reading apace and even laughed out loud at several points. I had to read one section to my wife as I found it quite funny. That part had to do with the first kiss between the main characters. The story is a kind of love story with a slightly unhappy ending. I found that instead of being sad I was
interested in the outcome. I wonder if that is because the last part of the story uses a multi-stage night cache as a plot device.
The use of geocaching in this story made sense. It was probably one of the better uses of geocaching in a story that I have read. I found that sometimes the aspects of geocaching were overly precise or slightly dry, sort of like someone that knew about geocaching was trying to explain it to people that don’t. I’ve read many books that involve the use of guns or airplanes or other technical elements and the author didn’t feel the need to explain those
elements. That doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy the fact that that in this case the author got it right. We are even informed that the protagonist uses a trusty Garmin
60Csx.
It would have been neat if the coordinates on the cover of the book pointed to a cache. They point to a dirt road in Maryland. I wonder if there is a surprise waiting for the reader at that location?
I enjoyed reading this story. Several times during this story I was reminded of cachers I know. I wondered if they’d also enjoy reading this book. I easily
recommend The Night Cache to other geocachers.
